Mawi Clinic

Oakville · Medical Clinic Reception · Commercial Interior Design · 2020

Mawi Medical Clinic came to us for a reception and waiting area that would feel calm and welcoming — a space that puts patients at ease the moment they step inside, without reading as clinical.

Studio Kimi anchored the room in warm white oak: a slatted reception front, a fluted partition that screens the work area, and built-in millwork that keeps everything tidy and out of view. Soft cream wall panels and a clean white desk keep the palette light and uncluttered.

The layout opens the waiting area to the entrance with clear sightlines to reception, while the wood screen gives staff a sense of privacy without closing the space off. A single orchid and framed botanicals carry a natural note through.

Because it is a medical space, every material was chosen to work as hard as it looks. The finishes throughout are antibacterial: a non-porous solid-surface reception counter, wipeable wall panelling, and large-format porcelain floors with minimal grout lines. The surfaces stand up to constant disinfecting without staining or dulling, so the room keeps looking the way it was designed to look, years of cleaning later.

That is the real design problem in a clinic: materials that survive medical-grade cleaning tend to read cold, and materials that read warm tend to be delicate. The answer here was to put the warmth where hands rarely go — the slatted oak screen, the wood tones above counter height — and keep every touch surface hard, sealed and washable. Patients read the room as calm and natural; the cleaning staff work with surfaces made for their products.

Lighting follows the same thinking. Recessed fixtures keep the ceiling plane simple and easy to maintain, and a warm colour temperature takes the edge off a space that could easily feel fluorescent. Clear sightlines from the entrance to the desk mean patients never wonder where to go, and reception can see the whole waiting area without leaving the station.

Commercial work is a different discipline from residential: the brief is measured in durability, maintenance and patient flow as much as in looks. If you are planning a clinic, office or retail space, our commercial design service covers exactly this kind of project.

The result is a clinic that feels considered and quiet — warm, simple, and easy to move through from the front door.

“We had a great experience working with Kookdo Kim. They did an excellent job designing the front area of our medical clinic, making it both welcoming and professional. Highly recommended!”
